Wellborn runs three main cabinet lines that show up constantly in Dallas additions and ADU projects: the Premier Series (framed construction, ½-inch plywood boxes, birch or maple face frames), the Estate Series (frameless full-access construction with slab or shaker fronts), and the Cabinet Concepts value line used heavily in garage conversions and rental ADUs. Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into: Wellborn changed their hinge boring pattern on Estate Series doors around 2018. If you have a pre-2018 door, a standard 35mm cup hinge won’t seat cleanly without a drilling jig, and we often replace the hinge and plate as a matched set rather than forcing a newer part onto an older bore. For door dimensions, measure the backside of the door, not the front; many Dallas owners order based on the face size and end up with a door that overhangs the frame by a quarter inch.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Wellborn specifically: drawer glides and soft-close mechanisms are where we tell people to stay with Wellborn hardware or a direct spec equivalent. The undermount glides Wellborn uses on Premier and Estate lines have a tab spacing that differs from big-box generic brands by about 3mm, and a “universal” glide will bind inside two years. Signs Your Wellborn Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Drawer fronts that sag or scrape the cabinet below. The undermount glide clip has worn out, usually on the left side where the weight of pots or dishes concentrates. You’ll see the drawer ride up on the right track and eat a groove into the face frame.
- Doors that won’t stay closed against the cabinet frame. The soft-close piston inside the hinge has lost its fluid, or the hinge plate screws have stripped out of the face frame from repeated slamming. In a Dallas summer, the heat accelerates that fluid loss.
- Visible swelling or darkening along the cabinet bottom edge. Water from a dishwasher leak, a slab floor that wicks moisture, or a bathroom ADU without proper exhaust has found its way into the MDF core. Once the core swells past 1/16 inch, the cabinet side cannot be truly repaired; it gets replaced.
- Adjustable shelves that bow in the middle. On Wellborn’s Cabinet Concepts line, the 3/4-inch melamine shelves will deflect under heavy canned goods or reference books. The shelf clip slots also widen over time, which is why we see shelves drop suddenly at the back.
- Hinges pulling free from the door, leaving a flared screw hole. This is the most common Wellborn-specific failure we see in Dallas additions under ten years old. The combination of a heavy slab door and high indoor humidity softens the fiberboard enough that the screw loses purchase. We repair this with a threaded insert rather than toothpicks and glue, which buys another decade.

If the problem is a loose hinge, a door that needs a quarter-turn adjustment, or a shelf clip that popped out, you can check those yourself with a Phillips driver and a level. There’s nothing inherently dangerous about adjusting cabinet hardware. In a climate-controlled ADU, expect 15 – 25 years from Wellborn Premier or Estate cabinets before you’re into replacement territory; the Cabinet Concepts line typically gives you 8 – 15 years before hinges and glides start to go one by one. Dallas humidity is the variable that moves that number: a detached ADU without a dehumidifier or proper HVAC can knock years off a cabinet’s life because the fiberboard core never fully dries between seasons.
If the swelling is caught within days and the damaged area is under 2 inches, we can sometimes dry it out, seal the edge, and refinish; beyond that, the MDF core has permanently expanded and the cabinet side or door gets replaced. The giveaway is the edge banding starting to peel away from the core; once you see that separation, the damage is structural.
