Techo-Bloc Home Additions & ADU: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

Planning a home addition or ADU in Dallas using Techo-Bloc materials typically runs $45,000 to $130,000 installed, depending on square footage, foundation requirements, and how much of the Techo-Bloc paver and wall system you’re incorporating. Most Dallas homeowners reach out to us when they’re mid-project or mid-quote: they’ve either bought Techo-Bloc pavers and wall blocks and can’t find a contractor who actually knows how to lay them to spec, or they have an existing Techo-Bloc patio, walkway, or retaining wall and are now extending the footprint of their home into that space, which means reworking the hardscape. Either way, you need a crew that understands both the structural side of an addition and how Techo-Bloc pieces behave under Dallas clay soil, summer heat, and the occasional hard freeze. We’re Penhallow Remodeling Dallas, an independent contractor with experience building additions and ADUs that tie into existing Techo-Bloc hardscapes, so the transition between old and new looks intentional, not patched on.

Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

Home additions and ADUs don’t have a Techo-Bloc model number the way a paver does, but if your project involves any Techo-Bloc product line, you need a contractor who knows the series you own and what it can carry. The most common pairings we see in Dallas are Techo-Bloc Blu 60 and Blu 80 pavers for driveways and pad extensions, Para and Mista wall blocks for foundation-adjacent retaining, and Raffinato or Semma pavers for patio and walkway tie-ins. A compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t catch until a load of material shows up: Techo-Bloc pavers are manufactured in metric-spec dimensions and modular laying patterns, so you can’t just drop a 4-inch-thick big-box paver next to a Blu 60 (which runs roughly 2 3/8 inches thick) without an uneven transition that catches toes and looks wrong. If Techo-Bloc didn’t make the exact color or series anymore, quality aftermarket equivalents exist, but the color blends are never a perfect match to a weathered original, and Texas sun fades everything differently. We spec OEM Techo-Bloc for visible transition zones and hold the right base materials for the structural parts.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

In this context, “failing” usually means the existing hardscape that will meet your new addition is shifting, sinking, or separating, and it has to be addressed before framing starts. Here’s what we see most often around Dallas:

  • Pavers settling or dipping near the existing foundation. Dallas sits on expansive clay that shrinks in summer and swells when it finally rains. If the original base wasn’t compacted in lifts, pavers sink, and that uneven plane transfers water toward your planned addition instead of away from it.
  • Retaining wall blocks leaning or bulging outward. This usually means water is building up behind the wall, or the original install skipped geogrid. A leaning Techo-Bloc wall next to a new ADU slab is a structural liability, not a cosmetic one.
  • Gaps opening between pavers and the house slab. Clay movement causes the paver field to drift laterally. If the gap exceeds about a half inch, water and ants are getting under the pavers, and the edge restraint has failed.
  • Sand washing out at the edges after every rain. Missing or broken edge restraint lets the joint sand escape, and the whole field starts to migrate. You’ll see it first along the low side of the yard, which in Dallas is often toward the street or a drainage swell.
  • Crumbling corners or spalled paver faces. Techo-Bloc makes dense, high-strength concrete, but years of Texas sun and the occasional freeze-thaw cycle will eventually show on older installations, especially around downspouts or pool splash zones.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

As mentioned up top, a full home addition or ADU project incorporating Techo-Bloc hardscape work in Dallas generally runs $45,000 to $130,000. The wide spread comes down to three things: square footage of conditioned space, foundation type (pier-and-beam is often less expensive than a new slab on grade in Dallas soils, but it depends on the lot), and linear feet of Techo-Bloc retaining wall or square footage of paver work you’re adding or redoing around the structure. A simpler room bump-out with a modest paver walkway lands at the low end. A full ADU with a driveway extension, a small retaining wall, and re-laid patio climbs toward the top. On smaller hardscape-specific repairs within an addition project, like re-setting 200 square feet of settled pavers, you’re looking at roughly $1,800 to $4,500 depending on base rebuild depth. Per The Kingswell Way, you get a written price before any work starts, and the number on day one is the number on the invoice. That written price includes labor, materials, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely identify the problem yourself: walk the paver line next to your proposed addition, check for gaps over half an inch, look at the edge restraint where pavers meet grass, and note any retaining wall sections leaning more than a degree or two. You should not, however, attempt to rebuild paver bases adjoining a new foundation, or re-stack a retaining wall that’s holding back a slope, without serious compaction equipment and a geotechnical read on the soil. Dallas clay doesn’t forgive shortcuts: skip the geogrid or skimp on base depth, and the wall moves again after the first wet season, this time maybe toward your new structure. The same goes for running utilities or tying into an existing slab. That’s licensed, permitted work. Give you a number before I pick up a tool, that’s the only way I know how to start. Call (940) 204-5368 and we’ll walk the site and give you a written line-item price, not a driveway guess.
