Sterling Fence Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

We install Sterling fence systems across Dallas, and most swap-outs we quote run between $3,500 and $9,000 depending on the fence line length, post condition, and whether we’re replacing a single section or the whole run. If a section of your Sterling fence has rotted, warped, or pulled loose at the post, you’re usually looking at a repair window of one to two days once we get eyes on it. The most common call we get starts the same way: a homeowner notices the gate dragging, then walks the line and finds a post leaning or a bottom rail soft to the touch.

Before you tear anything out, know this: Sterling fence systems are built to a specific post-and-rail spacing, and Dallas clay soil does things to fence posts that other parts of the country never deal with. We’ll walk you through exactly what’s failing, what it costs to fix, and whether you’re better off replacing the whole run or just a section.

Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling fence products fall into a few distinct series depending on the material and the era the original install happened. The two you’ll most often find around Dallas are the Sterling vinyl privacy series (6-foot and 8-foot in common widths) and the Sterling ornamental aluminum series, which shows up more in newer North Dallas and Richardson subdivisions. They are not interchangeable. Vinyl posts are typically 5-by-5 inches and hollow; the aluminum posts are smaller, typically 2.5-inch square, and set deeper with a concrete collar.

If you’re not sure what series you have, check the post cap or the inside of the gate frame for a stamped letter or number. If there’s no visible marking, measure the post width. We also run a parts cross-check against OEM Sterling spec sheets on the truck, because an aftermarket post that’s a quarter-inch off will leave a visible gap at the rail connection. In our experience, OEM Sterling parts meter out cleaner and carry their own manufacturer warranty, but there are well-made aftermarket pickets and rails that match profile and color closely enough for repair work. We’ll give you the tradeoff in writing before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Sterling Fence Installation Is Failing

  • A post is leaning away from the fence line. In Dallas, this almost always traces back to clay soil expansion and contraction. The post loses grip first, then the rails torque, then panels start to pop. Once the post moves more than an inch out of plumb, the repair usually means resetting it, not just bracing it.
  • The gate drags or won’t latch. A dragging gate is rarely just the hinge. It’s the post that the gate hangs on settling out of square. Tightening the hinge buys you a month. Resetting that post is what actually fixes it.
  • The bottom rail feels spongy or soft. On the vinyl series, trapped moisture in the rail is the culprit, especially on fence lines that sit against wet ground or get hit by sprinkler overspray. Rotten bottom rails have to come out; you can’t sister a vinyl rail the way you can with wood.
  • Pickets are cracking at the top or bottom edge. Texas sun and heat cycles harden vinyl over time. The material gets brittle after about 10 to 15 years here, and once it starts cracking at the connectors, the section is fighting itself every time the temperature swings.
  • Sections bow or ripple between posts. If the vinyl skin ripples in the middle of a section, the post spacing was too wide for the panel at the original install, or the rails have detached inside the pockets. The section needs to come down to see which it is.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower

For a full Sterling fence installation in Dallas, the range that shows up in our written quotes is $3,500 to $9,000. That includes removing and hauling off the old fencing when we’re doing the whole line, all new posts, rails, pickets or panels, and any gate hardware. On the low end of the range, you’re typically replacing a straight 60-to-80-foot run with easy ground access and reusing good existing posts. The top of the range comes with longer runs, corner work, gate rebuilds, or post removals in gray Dallas clay that’s hardened like brick in August.

We break every Sterling-specific quote into parts and labor on paper, so you see exactly what the post count, panel count, and prep time cost. And the price we hand you is the price you pay: under the Kingswell standard, the number on day one is the number on the invoice, with no mid-job change orders. Every install carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if something fails inside a year due to our installation work, we come back and make it right at no charge. That guarantee goes in writing, always.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. We are an independent Dallas contractor, not affiliated with Sterling, but we work with their fence systems daily and we carry the most common replacement posts, rails, and gate kits for their vinyl and aluminum series. A homeowner with a level and a post-hole digger can absolutely reset a single vinyl post in soft soil, provided the post itself isn’t cracked and the hole depth is right. Where DIY goes wrong on Sterling fences specifically is the gate side: a 6-foot vinyl privacy gate panel has real weight to it, and if the hinge post isn’t set deep and square, the whole assembly swings apart within a season. Aluminum is more forgiving on weight, but it’s unforgiving on level tolerances: if you’re an eighth of an inch off at the gate post top, the latch will never sit right.

If the post is cracked, the bottom rail is rotted through, or the gate is sagging more than a half-inch, give us a call at (940) 204-5368. Trevor will give you a price range over the phone and a written, line-item number once one of our background-checked techs walks the property.
