Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

If you own a Boxabl home in Dallas and your kitchen needs a full remodel, you’re looking at $14,000 – $45,000 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and whether you’re moving plumbing or electrical. That’s the honest installed range we quote at Penhallow Remodeling Dallas, and it includes a written price before any work starts, a defined arrival window, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. Most Boxabl owners call us because their factory kitchen is functional but limiting: compact cabinetry, laminate counters that show wear fast, or an island layout that doesn’t work for how they actually cook and entertain.

Boxabl homes ship with a kitchen that meets code and gets you moved in, but the finishes and layout are built for manufacturing efficiency, not for a homeowner who wants pull-out drawers, a real range hood, or stone counters. We remodel these kitchens regularly across Dallas, from Oak Cliff to newer developments near White Rock Lake, and we know exactly where the factory installs diverge from stick-built construction: the wall panels use a different fastening pattern, the plumbing chases are narrower, and the cabinetry is typically mounted to metal framing rather than wood studs. That changes how we plan the job, and it’s why you don’t hand this to a contractor who has never opened a Boxabl wall cavity.

Which Boxabl Models This Applies To

A small remodeled galley kitchen with cabinets to the ceiling

Boxabl currently produces the Casita as its primary residential model, a 375-square-foot unit with a fixed kitchen footprint along one wall. The kitchen in a Casita includes a two-burner electric cooktop, a compact refrigerator, a small sink, and flat-packed cabinetry that installs against the unit’s steel-framed wall panels. If you own a Casita and your kitchen feels cramped, the cabinet boxes themselves are standard 24-inch-deep base cabinets in a small run, usually 60 to 84 inches total, with an upper cabinet or two above the sink area. The countertop is typically a thin laminate over a lightweight substrate, not the 3cm stone or quartz you’d put in a stick-built home.

The key compatibility gotcha with any Boxabl kitchen remodel is the wall attachment system. Boxabl walls are structural insulated panels with steel framing and a laminated skin. Standard cabinet installation screws that work fine in wood studs will spin or strip in thinner metal framing if you don’t hit the right anchor points. We use the correct fasteners and, where needed, add blocking inside the wall cavity before hanging anything heavy. The plumbing rough-in for the sink is compact, usually a 1.5-inch drain line positioned close to the wall, and moving it even a few feet requires opening the panel and routing through existing chases. You can expand a Casita kitchen into an L-shape or add an island, but the floor plan is small: most Dallas owners opt for smarter storage and better surfaces within the existing footprint rather than a full re-layout. If you do want a different configuration, we’ll tell you exactly what that costs before we touch a wall.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Boxabl doesn’t sell branded kitchen components directly to homeowners. The cabinetry is commodity-grade RTA (ready-to-assemble) stock ordered through the factory’s supplier, and the countertops are basic laminate. There’s no compelling reason to source “OEM” kitchen parts because they’re not special, and they’re not built for longevity. We install KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry in Boxabl homes because those manufacturers build boxes that tolerate the temperature swings Dallas sees, and we install Cambria, Silestone, and Caesarstone countertops because they carry their own warranties on top of ours. Going aftermarket, in this case, means buying a better part than what shipped with the home, not a cheaper knockoff.

Signs Your Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Cabinet doors sag or scrape when you open them. RTA cabinet hinges loosen against the lightweight panels or the boxes themselves flex because they were never screwed into proper blocking. If you can see daylight through a closed door gap at the top, the hinge plates have likely pulled forward in the steel stud.
  • The countertop is delaminating at the edges. Laminate counters in Dallas kitchens fail fastest near the sink and dishwasher, where steam and heat cycles break down the adhesive bonding the laminate to the particleboard core. You’ll see a dark line or slight lift along the front edge first.
  • The sink caulk keeps separating from the wall or counter. Boxabl walls and floors flex slightly during transport and settling, more than traditional framing. The original caulk joint around the sink or backsplash may crack within the first year. Re-caulking helps briefly, but if it recurs, the counter itself is moving.
  • Drawers bind mid-slide or pop off their tracks. The factory drawer slides are light-duty side-mount hardware. In a compact kitchen that gets daily use, they wear out fast. You’ll feel the drawer hesitate halfway, then drop when you pull harder.
  • The upper cabinets have pulled away from the wall. This is the one you don’t ignore. If you can slip a putty knife behind the upper cabinet rail, the cabinet was screwed into metal framing without proper anchors, and it needs to come down and be rehung before it falls.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

A Boxabl kitchen remodel in Dallas runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed. The low end covers a small kitchen refresh: upgraded KraftMaid or Wellborn cabinets in the existing footprint, a new laminate or entry-level quartz countertop, a new sink and faucet, and a backsplash. The mid-to-high end covers Cambria or Silestone quartz or Caesarstone counters, an island with seating, soft-close drawers throughout, a new range hood, under-cabinet lighting, and getting the plumbing and electrical brought up to whatever the new layout needs. Here’s how the line items break down:

  • Cabinetry: $4,000 – $13,000 for a Casita-sized kitchen, depending on whether you choose stock, semi-custom, or fully custom boxes.
  • Countertops: $2,000 – $6,500. Laminate is cheapest, quartz is the middle, and natural stone runs the top.
  • Backsplash: $800 – $2,500, depending on tile choice and whether we’re tiling one wall or wrapping an L-shape.
  • Island, if added: $3,000 – $10,000 including the cabinet base, countertop, and any electrical run for outlets.
  • Plumbing and electrical moves: $1,000 – $5,000 depending on how far the sink or range shifts and what the wall panels allow.

Every one of these numbers is a written quote before we start, not a ballpark. The price on day one is the price on the invoice. No change orders unless you change the scope, and if we miss something during the walkthrough, that’s on us, not your checkbook. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails in the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

You can inspect a failing Boxabl kitchen yourself: check for pulled hinges, test drawer slides, run your hand along countertop edges for delamination, and look for a gap behind the upper cabinets. You should not attempt to remove or re-hang upper cabinets from steel wall panels, and you should not attempt to move a sink or range without cutting into the wall. The wall cavity in a Boxabl is a structural sandwich, and drilling or cutting in the wrong place can compromise the panel. Trevor Nash has opened enough of these Dallas Boxabl walls to know where the chases run and where the steel is safe to anchor. If you’re thinking about it, call us first and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s worth a service call.
