Schluter Bathroom Remodeling: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

Schluter bathroom remodeling in Dallas typically runs $9,000 – $28,000 installed, depending on shower size, waterproofing scope, and whether you’re replacing a failed system or building new. Most owners discover a problem the hard way: grout cracking along the shower floor, a soft spot in the tile near the drain, or water staining the ceiling below a second-floor bath. We stock Schluter-compatible materials and install them with written pricing before any work starts.

Here’s the reality in Dallas homes: Schluter’s Kerdi waterproofing membrane is one of the best systems on the market, but it’s only as good as the installation. We’ve pulled apart showers in Lakewood where the membrane was installed with the wrong thinset (unmodified is required, not the bucket of pre-mixed stuff from a big-box store), and the result was tile falling off the wall within eighteen months. Trevor Nash has rebuilt enough of these to know that the problem is rarely the Schluter product itself. It’s almost always a shortcut during install.

Key Takeaways:

  • Most Schluter failures in Dallas are installation errors, not product defects
  • Full bathroom remodels with Schluter systems run $9,000 – $28,000 installed
  • We provide written pricing before any work begins, no exceptions
  • Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes several system lines, and they need different handling. The Kerdi-Board line covers wall panels and shower niches. The Kerdi-Shower line includes pre-sloped trays, curbs, and waterproofing collars for drains. Ditra is their uncoupling membrane for floors, and it shows up under tile in Dallas bathrooms more often than most homeowners realize. If you have a failed shower pan, you’re likely dealing with a Kerdi-Shower tray or a site-built mud pan wrapped in Kerdi membrane.

Here’s a compatibility gotcha that burns people: Kerdi-Board and Kerdi membrane require unmodified thinset between the membrane and the tile. Modified thinset needs air to cure, and Schluter’s waterproofing is impermeable, so the modified mortar stays gummy for months. We’ve seen tile literally slide off walls in Preston Hollow because someone used the wrong mortar. If you’re matching an existing Schluter component, take a photo of any printed label on the board or membrane before it gets covered. The product codes (KB for Kerdi-Board, DS for shower trays) tell us exactly what to order.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for waterproofing components, we won’t substitute. The membrane, drain collars, and inside corners are engineered to work as one system, and mixing brands voids Schluter’s own warranty coverage. For trim pieces like edge profiles and niche shelves, quality aftermarket equivalents exist, but we default to genuine Schluter for any part that touches water.

We’re an independent Dallas remodeling company, not a Schluter dealer or affiliate. We install their systems because they perform when installed correctly, and because the material warranty backs up our workmanship warranty rather than replacing it.

Signs Your Schluter Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout cracking along the shower floor perimeter. This is usually the first visible sign. The shower pan or substrate underneath is flexing, which means the waterproofing layer may already be compromised. Movement is the enemy of tile, and a cracked grout line is how it announces itself.
  • Soft spots in the tile near the drain or in the corners. Water has gotten behind the tile and is rotting the substrate (the layer the tile sits on). By the time you feel softness underfoot, the damage has been spreading underneath for months. In Dallas’s humid summers, this accelerates quickly.
  • Water staining on the ceiling below a second-floor bathroom. This one sends people into a panic, and understandably so. It means the waterproofing has failed completely at some point in the pan or drain connection. The stain is often small at first, but the soaked subfloor above is usually much larger than the stain suggests.
  • Musty odor that won’t go away no matter how much you clean. That smell is mold growing behind tile or under the pan. It’s not a cleaning problem, it’s a moisture problem. Once the odor is persistent, the waterproofing has already failed.
  • Tile tiles cracking or popping loose from the wall. In Schluter installations, this almost always traces back to modified thinset or insufficient coverage. The tile has no mechanical bond to the membrane. One loose tile is a warning; three loose tiles is a tear-out.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in shower with large-format tile and a built-in niche

A Schluter bathroom remodel in Dallas runs $9,000 – $28,000 installed. The range breaks down like this:

  • Shower-only waterproofing repair with retile: $4,500 – $12,000
  • Small bathroom (toilet, vanity, shower) full remodel: $5,000 – $12,000
  • Primary bath with walk-in shower, new vanity, flooring: $9,000 – $28,000

What drives the number up or down? Shower size is the biggest factor, because Kerdi membrane and Kerdi-Board go on by the square foot and that’s also where the labor concentrates. A curbless shower costs more than a standard curb because the floor structure gets more complicated. Moving plumbing lines adds a few thousand. Custom niches, benches, and specialty tiles all add labor that a basic white subway tile shower doesn’t require.

Every quote is a written number before any work starts. Not a range, not a ballpark. The number on the quote is the number on the invoice, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise means if something fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing on every job, every time.

DIY or Call Us?

The honest split here: you can safely identify a problem, but you can’t safely fix a waterproofing failure without tearing out tile and rebuilding the sealed system. If you want to check things yourself, run your hand along every grout line in the shower and note any cracking or crumbling. Tap the tile with a screwdriver handle; a hollow sound means the tile has lost its bond. Look at the caulk line where the floor meets the wall; shrinkage or separation there lets water in at the most vulnerable joint in the shower.

Where DIY goes wrong: thinking a tube of silicone caulk fixes a failed shower pan. It doesn’t. Water that’s already behind the tile keeps doing damage while the caulk dries. Same for regrouting over a cracked pan: the movement underneath cracks the new grout within weeks. Schluter waterproofing is a system, and once it’s compromised, the damaged section has to come out and get rebuilt properly. That’s the job we do every week in Dallas.
